Activity: Posterior shoulder stretch



A very common stretch for the posterior structures of the shoulder, including the posterior deltoids, external rotators and posterior capsule


  • start with the spine in a neutral position, whether sitting or standing
  • reach the "stretch-side" arm across the body, keeping the shoulder and scapula in a relaxed position
  • gentle pressure pulling the arm across ad towards the body can be applied by the opposite hand at the elbow or upper arm
  • be sure not to elevate or depress the shoulder blade during this exercise
