Activity: Combined hip flexor stretch (rectus femoris & iliopsoas)



A more involved stretch focusing on all the hip-flexor muscles.


  • start in a lunge position, as pictured, with a cushion or pillow under the knee of the stretch-side
  • There are two movements needed to "find" the stretch
  • keep the pelvis "tucked", ie: don't over extend or arch the low back, while gently moving the hips forward
  • holding onto the foot of the stretch-side, gently pull the knee into flexion
  • a comfortable stretch should be felt down the front of the thigh
  • NOTE: this stretch may not be suitable for those with knee problems or more limited mobility
