Activity: Deep breathing: lateral thoracic expansion



A deep breathing exercise focusing on expanding the thorax or ribcage laterally (out to the sides), while keeping a relaxed shoulder girdle


  • start in either sitting or standing, with an ideal natural or "neutral" spinal posture.
  • shoulders and back extensors should remain fairly relaxed throughout the exercise.
  • take a deep breath in while focusing on expanding your ribcage laterally (this can be done by imagining breathing into the sides of your ribcage).
  • repeat as instructed.
  • NOTE: Always return to your normal breathing pattern if you feel any pain or light-headedness.
