Activity: Active upper thoracic extension, dissociation

Summary:

A dissociation exercise for the thoracic spine, separating the upper half of the thorax from the lower half.

Description:

  • start in a relaxed sitting position while maintain a neutral spine (ie: the normal, gentle curvature of the spine)
  • place one hand on the top of the abdomen with the heel of the hand and fingertips touching either side of the lower ribcage
  • place the other hand on the sternum (breastbone)
  • attempt to extend or elongate the upper thorax/ribcage without moving the lower half (ie: the hand contacting the sternum should rise, but not the lower hand)
  • repeat as directed
