Activity: Shoulder flexion with open chest



A basic exercise to retrain shoulder flexion or arm elevation with decreased glenohumeral compression and subacromial impingement


  • starting from supine (laying face-up) with your spine relaxed and neutral, arms extended, hands pointed towards the ceiling
  • focus on having the head of the humerus ("ball" of the shoulder) sink into the back of the shoulder joint
  • focus on relaxing or spreading the front of the chest while maintaining the arms pointing to the ceiling
  • slowly move the arms towards a position on either side of the head, while maintaining the aforementioned focus
  • NOTE: only work within the painfree range
