Activity: Shoulder stabilization: in flexion



basic scapular and shoulder stabilization exercise using elastic or cable resistance


  • standing upright, grasp the elastic tubing/band or cable resistance with the load behind you (the origin of the band or cable should be at shoulder height or lower)
  • keeping the arm straight, flex the shoulder bringing the arm up to a maximum of 90 degrees (the horizontal)
  • "set" the scapula (shoulder blade), meaning keeping it snug against the ribcage, ie: not winging out from the back
  • ensure the scapula stays at a relatively neutral height, not overly depressed or shrugged up towards the head
  • maintaining the "set" of the scapula, draw letters, numbers, circular movements, etc.. (what is drawn is not important, so long as they are small, purposeful movements)
  • NOTE: the height of the hand and the amount of resistance is totally dependent on the type and extent of injury
