Activity: 1st MTP extension stretch



Extension stretch for the big toe, focused on the MTP joint.


  • sitting with the ankle/foot of the stretch-side resting on the opposite knee
  • gently bring the toe in alignment with the 1st metatarsal (the long bone in the foot that is attached to the base of the toe)
  • grasping the big toe near the MTP joint (joint where the toe "starts"), gently extend the toe (ie: move the toe towards shin)
  • NOTE: it is very important to maintain the alignment of the toe when extending it, as failing to do so can actually worsen the condition
