Activity: Anterior compartment of leg stretch: standing



A standing stretch for the muscles of the anterior compartment (tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus)


  • standing with at least one hand touching something for support (ie: wall, countertop, etc...)
  • bend the stretch-side hip and knee up, and place the dorsum (top surface) of the foot and toes on the floor
  • gently push forwards until a stretch is felt in the anterior part of the lower leg or shin
  • emphasis can be placed on the toe extensor muscles by curling the toes upwards
  • NOTE: this exercise places the ankle in a vulnerable position so should always be done with support, ie: holding the wall, if balance is suspect
